The cryosphere (from the Greek kryos, for cold) consists of frozen water on the Earth’s land and sea surfaces. It includes all snow and ice deposits, such as glaciers, ice caps, ice sheets, and sea ice; seasonal and permanent snow cover, lake and river ice, permafrost and frozen ground.
